Finger is a protocol used to request information about a user on a server (usually UNIX servers). It is defined in RFC 1288. While popular in days past, it is no longer in frequent use.

Finger servers usually run on TCP port 79.

l7-filter uses the finger pattern. However, the finger protocol allows arbitrary strings to be sent each way, so it only covers the most common cases.
