Gopher is a predecesor to HTTP, defined in RFC 1436. It is essentially unused on today's Internet.

Gopher servers usually listen on TCP port 70.

l7-filter uses the gopher pattern. It is well tested, However, the nature of the protocol prevents any pattern from being able to catch all connections.
